Thank you for your Freedom of Information request regarding ethnic population estimates from 2002 to 2017.

We do not currently publish national statistics on the population by ethnic group. The latest available national statistics are from the 2011 census.

We have published Population denominators by ethnic group, regions and countries: England and Wales which provides the data you seek for the years 2011 to 2017. These denominators are neither National Statistics nor standard published experimental statistics and were not produced using methods which have undergone formal Quality Assurance. They were produced specifically for use as part of the Race Disparity Audit, following discussion with the Race Disparity Unit of their specific requirements and time-frame.

We did publish population estimates by ethnic group as experimental statistics covering the years 2001 to 2009. These estimates were "experimental" statistics and have not yet received formal National Statistics status. They should therefore be used with appropriate caution and awareness of their limitations.

In 2017 we published the findings of an external review into population estimates by ethnic group. When accessing any of our files please read the 'notes, terms and conditions' contained within them.

Please do not hesitate to contact us directly on pop.info@ons.gov.uk if you require anything further.
