Thank you for your enquiry.

We are responsible for publishing mortality statistics for deaths registered in England and Wales, using the information supplied on the death certificate. The most recent year for which mortality statistics are available is 2017.

Information regarding whether a deceased person was a war veteran is not available. Therefore, we are unable to provide information you have requested.

However, using our 20th century Mortality file and 21st Century Mortality file you will be able to identify the total number of deaths from pituitary disorders.

Please note that in January 2001, the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) was introduced in England and Wales which superseded the Ninth Revision (ICD-9). All conditions mentioned on the death certificate prior to 2001 were coded using ICD9, and from 2001 ICD10.

The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

Deaths with an underlying cause of pituitary disorder would be assigned the following ICD9 and ICD10 codes:

ICD9 (1979-2000)

253 Disorders of the pituitary gland and its hypothalamic control
253.0 Acromegaly and gigantism
253.1 Other and unspecified anterior pituitary hyperfunction
253.2 Panhypopituitarism
253.3 Pituitary dwarfism
253.4 Other anterior pituitary disorders
253.5 Diabetes insipidus
253.6 Other disorders of neurohypophysis
253.7 Iatrogenic pituitary disorders
253.8 Other disorders of the pituitary and other syndromes of diencephalohypophyseal origin
253.9 Unspecified

ICD10 (2001-2017)

E23.1 Drug-induced hypopituitarism
E23.2 Diabetes insipidus
