Thank you for your request.

The Living Costs and Food Survey (LCFS) is the main source of data on household expenditure. However, the sample size of the LCFS is such that in order to compile estimates at the sub-national level we recommend combining the data for three years. This enables the production of reasonable estimates by government areas and countries but not to a local authority level.

The published table A35 contains a regional breakdown of expenditure, which includes the categories of restaurants and café meals, alcoholic drinks brought home and alcoholic drinks (away from home). Allowing for the fact that the published tables are rounded to the nearest 10 pence, estimates of proportions could be calculated from existing published expenditure tables. This spreadsheet contains an index of LCFS published tables, which provides links to all versions of our tables that are available online. You should therefore be able to click on the links within the spreadsheet to download the required tables and therefore calculate an estimate.

If you are unable to do this or if you require different breakdowns of expenditure categories from the LCFS then you will need to contact the customer services team of ONS Social Services Division who will be able to advise you. This team provides an ad hoc analysis service, including tabulations of the LCFS. This service is subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate. If you would like to enquire about our service, then please contact socialsurveys@ons.gov.uk

If you are able to do your own cross-tabulations, you could purchase an anonymised LCFS dataset from the UK Data Service. Details on costs and how to download the data can be found on their website:
