The Office for National Statistics (ONS) have recently entered into an agreement with Visa to receive aggregated and anonymised data on UK card payments for analytical and statistical purposes.

This is an extension of our programme of work that started during the COVID-19 pandemic, where ONS received aggregated data from several companies in the payment industry to aid the Government response to the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The latest Visa data offer new opportunities to understand UK consumer spending patterns on an aggregated and anonymised basis and help the ONS better measure UK household expenditure, improving the quality of our national and subnational statistics. As the research progresses, we will be working closely with Visa to publish relevant analysis and insights to benefit users and the research community.
