We said

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request regarding the number of homes and businesses in Hampshire, Dorset, West Sussex, Berkshire, Surrey and Wiltshire.

We publish household projections which take current trends in household formation and project them forward to indicate the projected change in the number of households into the future.

To find the data for Hampshire, go to line 282 of worksheet 406 of the file downloadable from the link above. This covers the lower-tier district authorities in Hampshire, so you will also need to add Portsmouth (line 264) and Southampton (line 267) as they are unitary authorities not included in the figure for Hampshire. Similar data is available in this table for the other counties you requested.

A household is defined as one person living alone or a group of people (not necessarily related) living at the same address who share cooking facilities and share a living room or sitting room or dining area.

Households don’t equate exactly to ‘homes’ and the closest information available is about ‘dwellings’ and is data from the Ministry for Housing Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), see Table 100, of their Live Tables on dwelling stock (including vacant properties).

We publish the dataset UK business: activity, size and location which provides information on counts of businesses down to local authority (LA) . For Berkshire you would need to aggregate the Local Authorities of Bracknell Forest (line 273), Reading (279), Slough (280) and West Berkshire, Windsor & Maidenhead and Wokingham (283 to 285). Please note: this publication represents businesses registered with HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for Value Added Tax (VAT) and/or Pay As You Earn (PAYE). The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) produces Business population estimates, which seek to provide full coverage of all types of businesses in the UK including an estimate of the unregistered business population.

If you require further information on counts of businesses at a more granular geography level, please visit Nomis web. Nomis is a service provided by the Office for National Statistics to give you free access to the most detailed and up-to-date UK labour market statistics from official sources. When accessing any of our files please read the 'notes, terms and conditions' contained within them.

Please do not hesitate to contact us directly on pop.info@ons.gov.uk if you require anything further.
