The Office for National Statistics is responsible for the Census in England and Wales and therefore we do not hold all of the information required to meet your specified requirements. Although we do not hold all of the required information we have been able to extract some data from the 2011 Census for England and Wales. The information presented in the attached table refers to the usually resident population who specified their country of birth as being within the United Kingdom at the time of the Census on 27th March 2011. The figures, extracted from a commissioned table, provide breakdowns of the number and percentage of persons by age and ethnic group
Some guidance on specific concepts and definitions used in the table is set out below. If required, further information on census definitions, variables and classifications can be accessed
Usual Resident - the main population base for outputs from the 2011 Census is the usual resident population on census day (27th March 2011). For 2011 Census purposes, a usual resident is anyone who, on census day, was in the UK and had stayed or intended to stay in the UK for a period of 12 months or more, or had a permanent UK address and was outside the UK and intended to be outside the UK for less than 12 months
Country of Birth - the country in which a person was born. The country of birth question included six tick box responses, one for each of the four parts of the UK, one for the Republic of Ireland and one for ‘Elsewhere’. The figures in the attached table include responses to each of the four UK tick boxes
Ethnic Group - classifies people according to their own perceived ethnic group and cultural background
Dependent Child - a dependent child is a person aged 0-15 in a household (whether or not in a family) or aged 16-18 in full-time education and living in a family with his or her parent(s). It does not include any children who have a spouse, partner or child living in the household. Unfortunately the only available information on ethnicity by country of birth is for five year age groups
It may be possible to produce a special table which would provide more detailed information by age. UK level age specific fertility rates have been published here. These show the number of births per 1000 women in each age group that had a birth in each year. These can be converted to a total fertility rate (TFR) for the whole population by summing a column and multiplying by 5
The TFR is a commonly used measure of the current intensity of childbearing and broadly gives an estimate of how many children each woman would have on average if current rates of childbearing remained the same throughout her childbearing life
