You asked

I am requesting for the ethnic breakdown of racially motivated hate crimes for the years 2018/2019, and 2019/2020. Specifically, I am looking for the statistical breakdown of racially motivated hate crimes perpetrated against the East and Southeast Asian communities within this time frame.

If possible, I would also like to request for the raw dataset used to compile the 2019/2020 hate crime statistics report by the Home Office.

Thank you for your enquiry on racially motivated hate crime by ethnicity.

The Hate crime, England and Wales, 2019 to 2020 report published by the Home Office contains some ONS data from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) on hate crime by ethnic group. Specifically, Table 15 of the Hate crime, England and Wales, 2019 to 2020: appendix tables contains data on the proportion of adults who were victims of racially motivated hate crime by ethnic group. Please note that these estimates are based on combined data for the year ending March 2018 to the year ending March 2020. The use of combined data is due to the low volume of hate crime incidents in the sample survey which means the figures are not sufficiently robust to report for a single year of the CSEW.

We have also released the following user data request in relation to CSEW hate crime which contains a breakdown by the more detailed ethnic group categories. However, please note that these data are for the combined years ending March 2016 to March 2018:

Percentage of adults aged 16 years and over who were victims of racially motivated hate crime and all hate crime, by ethnic group, year ending March 2016 to year ending March 2018, CSEW

Unfortunately, these are the most detailed ethnic group categories we collect information on.

We do make our CSEW datasets available from the UK Data Service. Guidance on how to access the data can be found here on the UK Data Service website: https://ukdataservice.ac.uk/get-data/how-to-access.aspx

The Home Office would be better placed to answer queries specific to their data. They can be contacted at: crimeandpolicestats@homeoffice.gov.uk
