The National Crime Recording Standard (NCRS) was introduced in April 2002, although some forces adopted NCRS practices before the standard was formally introduced. Figures before and after that date are not directly comparable. The introduction of NCRS led to a rise in recording in year ending March 2003 and, particularly for violent crime, in the following years as forces continued to improve compliance with the new standard.
Includes the British Transport Police.
The Sexual Offences Act 2003, introduced in May 2004, altered the definition and coverage of sexual offences.
HMICFRS refers to Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services.
