  • In the week ending 17 November 2023 (Week 46) 11,243 deaths were registered in England and Wales; this was 2.6% above the five-year average (284 excess deaths).

  • The number of deaths registered in England in Week 46 was 10,521; this was 2.7% above the five-year average (276 excess deaths).

  • The number of deaths registered in Wales in Week 46 was 700; this was 1.7% above the five-year average (12 excess deaths).

  • Of the deaths registered in Week 46 in England and Wales, 259 mentioned novel coronavirus (COVID-19), accounting for 2.3% of all deaths; this was 52 less deaths with COVID-19 mentioned compared with the previous week.

  • Of the deaths registered in Week 46, 239 mentioned COVID-19 in England, accounting for 2.3% of all deaths; in Wales, 20 deaths mentioned COVID-19, accounting for 2.9% of all deaths.

  • Of the 259 deaths involving COVID-19 in Week 46, 62.5% (162 deaths) had this recorded as the underlying cause of death, which was a lower proportion when compared with Week 45 (67.2%).

  • Using the most up-to-date data we have available, the number of deaths from the week ending 13 March 2020 to the week ending 17 November 2023 was 2,174,730 in England and Wales; of these 2,036,792 were recorded in England and 134,222 were recorded in Wales.

  • From the week ending 13 March 2020 to the week ending 17 November 2023 the number of deaths involving COVID-19 in England and Wales was 210,269; of these, 197,607 were recorded in England and 12,299 were recorded in Wales.

  • From the week ending 13 March 2020 to the week ending 17 November 2023 the number of excess deaths in England and Wales was 196,967; of these, 187,700 were recorded in England and 10,404 were recorded in Wales.
