Age-standardised mortality rates per 1 million population, standardised to the 2013 European Standard Population.
Cause of death was defined using the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) for the years 1993 to 2000 and Tenth Revision (ICD-10) from 2001 onwards (see Background note 4). Deaths were included where the underlying cause was drug related and the specified substance was mentioned on the death certificate.
Figures are for deaths registered, rather than deaths occurring between 1993-2014.
Figures for England and Wales include deaths of non-residents.
Heroin/morphine deaths up two thirds between 2012 and 2014.
