ONS announces first data journalism internships

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has announced the successful applicants for its first data journalism internships.

Six post-graduates from Cardiff, City and Goldsmiths universities will have the opportunity to develop their expertise with ONS and with media organisations this summer.

The first interns are:

  • Laura Harding (Cardiff University ) who will be working with the Daily Telegraph

  • Alexandra Ma and Ryan Watts (City University), who will be working with the BBC

  • Marie Segger, Nora Matty and Matty Edwards (Goldsmiths), working with Trinity Mirror Group, ONS and Press Association respectively

Commenting on the awards, Darren Waters of the ONS said: “At ONS we know the challenge of making complex statistical information clear and accessible, so that it can be used to underpin decisions that affect everyone in the UK. The media face a similar challenge in their reporting and increasingly it is data journalists who are responsible for delivering this. That is why ONS feels it is important to encourage and support those planning to work in the media to build their skills in clear and accurate reporting of what such data is really saying.”
