Deputy National Statistician Mike Keoghan is to leave the Office for National Statistics (ONS) to join the Ellison Institute of Technology at Oxford to set up its economics function and shaping its work on longevity.

During his three years in post, Mike has overseen the delivery of complex transformation across ONS’s economic, social and environmental statistics portfolio, including the conclusion of the ARIES improvement programme for key economic indicators.

Mike has driven innovation in use of data to deliver responsive analysis on topics such as the increased cost of living, in support of the ONS’s long-term strategy.

His achievements also include overseeing the establishment of ONS’s local statistics service, opening up sub-national statistics to better meet local policy needs.

The ONS will now begin an open recruitment exercise for a permanent replacement.

National Statistician, Sir Ian Diamond said:

“I am grateful to Mike for his expertise and dedication over the last three years. His leadership has been instrumental in advancing ONS’s approach to innovation and sustainability, introducing data sources that have provided insights for decision making at a national, local and individual level.”
