European Standard Population
The European Standard Population is an artificial population structure, first introduced in 1976, which is used in the weighting of mortality or incidence data to produce age-standardised rates (ASRs). At the end of 2012, Eurostat, the statistical institute of the European Union, decided to bring this structure up to date. The change to the methods of calculating ASRs will have a significant effect on a variety of figures published as official statistics in the UK.
