The tables and charts show the time series for immigration, emigration and net migration (the difference between immigration and emigration). Table 1 and Table 2 contain estimates of Long-Term International Migration (LTIM) by citizenship and by main reason for migration. Animated timeline of Long-term migration into and out of the United Kingdom
The International Migration Timeline is a new product that shows key long term international migration estimates (i.e. migrants who change their country of usual residence for at least one year) from 1964 to 2010. It allows the user to select particular years and see the figures in context of GDP, unemployment and key events or developments that occurred during these years. Drivers of migration are complex and changes are difficult to attribute to any particular event, so these events are included to provide context, but may not necessarily be the main cause for changes in migration patterns. The product also shows the top 3 countries of origin and destination for migrants to and from the UK and it will be updated with final figures annually in November.
