Health Statistics Quarterly - The effect of lengthening Life Expectancy on future pension and Long-Term Care expenditure in England, 2007 to 2032
The aim of this analysis is to examine the effect of different assumptions about future trends in life expectancy (LE) on the sustainability of the pensions and long-term care (LTC) systems. The context is the continuing debate in England about the reform of state pensions and the reform of the system for financing care and support. Macro and micro simulation models are used to make projections of future public expenditure on LTC services for older people and on state pensions and related benefits, making alternative assumptions on increases in future LE. The projections cover the period 2007 to 2032 and relate to England.

Population Trends - Opportunities for new research using the post-2001 ONS Longitudinal Study (Pdf 132Kb)
The addition of 2001 Census data to the ONS Longitudinal Study extends the range of research topics that this unique data resource can support. Census questions on religion, care-giving and self-rated health that were asked for the fi rst time in 2001 and the repetition of 1991 questions on limiting long-standing illness and ethnicity raise opportunities for new longitudinal investigation in these areas. This article describes how new 2001 methodologies including data imputation, the One Number Census and de jure enumeration affect the LS database. The support service for existing and prospective LS users is described.

Health Statistics Quarterly - Trends in socio-economic inequalities in female mortality, 2001-08. Intercensal estimates for England and Wales
This article presents for the first time, estimates of annual mortality rates for women of working age by NS-SEC for the period 2001 to 2008. Previously it was possible to produce mortality rates by NS-SEC only at the time of the decennial census. The Labour Force Survey was used to estimate female populations by age and NS-SEC for each year between 2001 and 2008 in order to provide denominators for these estimates. The results suggested that while there was no strong year on year trend, socio-economic inequalities in mortality appeared to increase in the period 2001 to 2008.
