The percentage of households where no adults work was 18.8 per cent, down 0.3 percentage points from a year earlier.

The percentage of households where all adults work was 53.5 per cent, up 0.5 percentage points from a year earlier.

Of the regions in England and countries of the UK, the North East had the highest percentage of workless households.

The number of households in which no adult has ever worked was 370,000, up 18,000 from a year earlier.

There were 1.8 million children living in workless households, down 26,000 from a year earlier.

This Statistical Bulletin provides information about the labour market participation of households and the people and children living within them. It looks at the number where all members of the household are working, not working and a mixture of both. Households are restricted to those that include at least one person aged 16 to 64. Information on participation is shown for the regions across the UK.
Information is also provided for different household types, for example those with dependent children and those without. It also looks at how labour market participation varies depending on the financial arrangement under which individuals live within a property. Finally it shows the number and percentage of households where no member has ever had a paid job.
These National Statistics are produced to high professional standards and released according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.
