This release contains updated output, inputs and productivity estimates for public services in the UK between 1997 and 2010. It provides an analysis of key trends, and identifies which public service areas are the key drivers for total productivity.

This chapter is about how pension schemes ensure that they have the money to fulfil their obligations of paying out benefits to pensioners and their dependents. Specifically, the chapter is about ‘funded’ pension schemes, those in which benefits (the schemes’ liabilities) are met from a fund built up in advance from contributions and returns on investment. It does not cover ‘unfunded’ (or pay-as-you-go) pension schemes – most public sector occupational pension schemes and the state pension system – where liabilities are not underpinned by a fund.

The PSF Statistical Bulletin, is published jointly by ONS and HM Treasury on a monthly basis, and provides the latest available measures for key public sector financial statistics such as Public Sector Current Budget (PSCB), Net Borrowing (PSNB), Net Debt (PSND) and PSND as a percentage of GDP. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) House Price Index, previously published by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) is a monthly release that publishes figures for mix-adjusted average house prices and house price indices for the UK and its component countries and regions. This bulletin presents the main messages from the publication of the 2011 mid-year population estimates for Primary Care Organisations (PCOs) in England. It also describes changes that have taken place since 2001 and the age distribution of the population within these areas.

This is part of a series of short articles examining the well-being of older people aged 50 and over using measures related to the Measuring National Well-being Programme. The Office for National Statistics measures of well-being are organised into ten domains with each domain having between three and five separate indicators. This means that there is a threefold potential for UK Trade statistics to inform the Government’s view of the UK economy, as well as the views of others, such as economists, City analysts, academics, the media, and international organisations.

EU Member Governments have to report their actual and planned government deficits, and the levels of their debt, promptly to the European Commission, to specific deadlines twice each year. The estimates in this statistical bulletin have been supplied to the European Commission by ONS in accordance with the schedules in the Excessive Deficit Procedure. Forecasts for future years are provided separately by HM Treasury.

Index of Services shows the monthly movements in gross value added for the service industries, which overall account for around 77% of UK Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Labour productivity statistics in terms of output per worker, output per job and output per hour worked for the whole economy and a range of industries. The release also presents unit labour cost estimates, regional productivity estimates and experimental market sector productivity estimates.

Service Lives of R&D Assets: Patent Approach. This publication considers the use of patent life estimates as an indicator of R&D service lives, discussing the strengths and limitations of this approach in detail.

This release presents information about the investment choices of insurance companies, self-administered pension funds, investment trusts, unit trusts and property unit trusts. Reported in this release are quarterly net investment data arising from financial transactions (investments) made by these institutional groups. Also included are quarterly balance sheet data for short-term assets and liabilities, along with quarterly income and expenditure data for insurance companies and self-administered pension funds. All data are reported at current prices (effects of price changes included).

Service Lives of R&D Assets: Background and Comparison of Approaches

2011 Census statistics provide a rich source of information about the number, distribution and characteristics of the population of the United Kingdom as at census day (27 March 2011). This release provides census estimates of the usually resident population by age and sex, and estimates of the number of households, for each local authority district in the United Kingdom.
