This report provides detailed information on the principle and variant fertility assumptions used in the 2012-based national population projections. For England, and for Wales, the long-term average completed family size is assumed to be 1.90 children per woman. A broader picture of the public sector balance sheet: State pension and other other pension obligations - An update at April 2012
Since the last ONS article was published on this subject in December 2011, further indications of the size of Government pension obligations have become available as a result of pioneering work by ONS. These pension obligations estimates are published today in a separate ONS article. This article summarises the new pension obligations estimates and discusses their implications for assessing the broader ‘public sector debt’. It clarifies that, while such new estimates provide very useful extra information for assessing the state of the UK economy, they do not add to public sector debt in either the general or accounting sense.

A Generational Approach to Long Term Public Finance in the UK (Pdf 200Kb)
This article presents a description of what generational accounts are and how they might provide indications of the sustainability of fiscal policy. Generational accounts also give indications of intergenerational equity, because they can be used to examine whether future generations may have to pay a higher tax rate than current generations if current polices on spending by government which benefits individuals directly, social benefits including health and education spending, are maintained. Such calculations require forecasts across a range of demographic and economic variables. The article provides the methodological background for work which NIESR are doing for ONS to provide a set of generational accounts.

A Profile of Deprivation in Larger English Seaside Destinations, 2007 and 2010
There is a perception that the economies of English towns and cities which once thrived on seaside resort tourism have declined and are enduring high levels of deprivation as a result of people going abroad for their holidays. Such is the perceived extent of this decline that during the 2010 election campaign all three major political parties discussed the problems facing British seaside and coastal settlements. In this article the Office for National Statistics defines the 57 largest English seaside destinations in terms of resident population. These destinations are then analysed, put into the context of the national picture, using the English Indices of Deprivation for 2007 and 2010 to ascertain whether this widely held belief holds true. In particular, are the larger seaside destinations more deprived than the rest of England and if so how does that deprivation vary across destinations.
