This note and the associated tables have been produced on the request of Regional Development Agencies (RDAs) for use by interested parties to assist in analysing and understanding foreign ownership of businesses in the UK and sub-nationally. The information will assist those developing inward investment strategic policies, giving an overview of subnational and regional differences. The tables provide a high level summary of foreign ownership activity in English regions and constituent countries of the UK – equivalent to NUTS 1 areas.

The data contained in this publication are produced from a snapshot of the Inter Departmental Business Register (IDBR) taken on 22 March 2010. The IDBR contains information on VAT traders and PAYE employers in a statistical register.

Regular data on self-employment for both women and men is available from the Labour Force Survey and this is often used as a proxy for business ownership. The number of women who are self-employed has grown in recent years, but much of the growth is in women working part-time and focusing on more flexible working patterns to fit into domestic commitments.
