Price Indices and Inflation

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) House Price Index, previously published by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) is a monthly release that publishes figures for mix-adjusted average house prices and house price indices for the UK and its component countries and regions. All tables transferred from the DCLG to ONS can be accessed via the reference tables that are available in the data section of this release.

This House Price Index reference table contains all the annual live tables transferred to the ONS from the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG). Please note that during the transfer, the ONS has renumbered the live tables - full details of the new numbers and their corresponding DCLG numbers can be found in the contents tab.

This publication is produced monthly and provides price movement data at all manufacturing, aggregated industry and product group level. It consists of data supplied from individual UK manufacturers, importers and exporters. Revisions to data provide one indication of the reliability of key indicators. This spreadsheet shows summary information on the size and direction of the revisions which have been made to the data covering a five year period. A statistical test has been applied to the average revision to find out if it is statistically significantly different from zero. These numbers include the effect of the reclassification onto SIC 2007.

This dataset provides price movement data at all manufacturing, aggregated industry and product group level. It consists of data supplied from individual UK manufacturers, importers and exporters. Indices for the latest two months are provisional due to the level of imputation present for items where the latest prices are not available. The latest five months are subject to revisions in light of (a) late and revised contributor data and (b) revisions to seasonal adjustment factors which are re-estimated every month.

The data are based on the Standard Industrial Classification SIC (2007) and are calculated on a base year of 2005=100. The indices are widely used by government and business as an authoritative source of information on inflation, cost adjusting and price variation in trading contracts. Indices for the latest two months are always provisional and flagged with a "p" marker due to the level of imputation present for items where the latest prices are not available. This level of imputation reduces significantly for earlier months, allowing index data to be published as firm values. Occasionally, new information produces a change in the value of an index already published as firm. Where change is significant, index values are recalculated and annotated with an "r" marker.

Summary of Consumer Price Indices

This spreadsheet pulls together the numerous tables that were published prior to the launch of the new ONS website. It provides a one-stop-shop which aims to complement the Consumer Price Indices Time Series data sets that can be found via the ONS website The 'Contents' page provides guidance on those data sets which are included, along with a correlation index showing old and new naming conventions and previous publication source(s), for example: RPI All items 1947 -2013.

The House Price Index (HPI) is a monthly output based on mortgage completions data from the Regulated Mortgage Survey (RMS). This release contains data on mix-adjusted average house prices and price indices, along with annual rates of change by region, type of buyer and whether a dwelling is new or pre-owned. A seasonally adjusted mix-adjusted house price index and monthly house price change are also included.

This reference table provides full historical series for the monthly tables accompanying the February 2013 House Price Index Statistical Bulletin. This reference table also contains all the quarterly live tables transferred to the ONS from the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG).
