Estimates of short-term migration, based on information gathered by the International Passenger Survey (IPS) when migrants return home. Estimates refer to flows to and from England & Wales as well as the average stock of short-term migrants present in or absent from England & Wales. Statistics are provided for migration of periods between 3 and 12 months and 1 and 12 months.

STIM tables contain detailed information on the characteristics of short-term international migrants. Table STIM.02 is based on information collected by the International Passenger Survey (IPS) at the end of migrants' visits and contains information on the average stock of short-term migrants present in or absent from England and Wales and migrants' average length of stay in or away from England and Wales. Estimates are provided for migrations of one to twelve months, three to twelve months and migrations meeting the United Nations definition of short-term migration. This table shows estimates broken down by migrants' main reason for migration. Broad reason groupings are published. Estimates are available for mid years (July to June) 2004 to 2011.

The top five countries in each category are provided for migrations meeting the United Nations definition of short-term migration. Estimates are available for mid years (July to June) 2004 to 2011.

This report examines two similar data sets on short term migration: estimates of short-term immigration for local authorities and England and Wales and estimates of short-term residents (STRs) from the 2011 Census. The tables and charts show the time series for immigration, emigration and net migration (the difference between immigration and emigration). Table 1 and Table 2 contain estimates of Long-Term International Migration (LTIM) by citizenship and by main reason for migration. LTIM is the most comprehensive measure of long-term international migration and is primarily based on the International Passenger Survey (IPS), with some adjustments. As detailed analyses on the characteristics of migrants are not possible from LTIM, Table 3 contains a cross tabulation of citizenship by main reason for migration based on IPS data only

2011 Census statistics provide a rich source of information about the number, distribution and characteristics of the population in England and Wales as at census day (27 March 2011). The statistics included in this release provide the first detailed cross tabulations of two or more topics from the census that add to the detail already provided in earlier releases.
