Personal Income and Wealth

This short article analyses some of the key trends affecting the incomes of households in the middle of the income distribution. It studies the change in median household income between 1977 and 2010/11 and compares this with changes in GDP per person for both the UK and USA. The article then looks at how the characteristics of the middle fifth of households have changed over time and how the composition of their income has changed during the recent economic downturn and over the longer term.

Data from the 2011 General Lifestyle Survey on occupational and personal pensions for employees and the pension arrangements of the self-employed. The chapter presents both trends over time and detailed data for the 2011 survey year.

The Burden of Household Debt in Great Britain

This short article examines the distribution of private household wealth in Great Britain, focussing specifically on the characteristics of those households in the top 10 per cent of the wealth distribution.

This article looks at how benefits in kind households receive from the state are measured within the Effects of Taxes and Benefits on Household Income publication and how the methodology behind these measurements has changed between the years 2005/06 and 2010/11. We also retrospectively apply the current methodology back to the year 2005/06 in order to produce a consistent series showing how the size and distribution of benefits in kind received by households have changed over time.

This Statistical Bulletin, produced by the Office for National Statistics every two years, shows the ownership of ordinary shares in quoted companies in the UK. Share ownership is measured using data obtained from Euroclear (CREST), the electronic settlement system for equity share trading, and further analysis of share registers. Share Ownership 2010 shows how the value of UK quoted shares was distributed between sector of beneficial owner at 31 December 2010.

ONS has produced experimental estimates of average household income for Middle Layer Super Output Areas (MSOAs) in England and Wales. This article looks at spatial disparities in average income, in particular how it was distributed within regions and local authorities. Summary guidance is provided on issues associated with using model-based estimates. The article should be of interest to planners and regeneration specialists, and those who want to understand local economies.
