Occupational Pension Schemes Survey, 2012
The Occupational Pension Schemes Survey (OPSS) is an annual survey of occupational pension schemes, and is run by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The survey was first run in 1953, then in 1956 and 1963, and then every four to five years until 2004 when it became an annual survey. Until its transfer to ONS in 2006, OPSS was run by the Government Actuary’s Department (GAD).

Ownership of UK Quoted Shares, 2012
This Statistical Bulletin, produced by the Office for National Statistics every two years, shows the ownership of ordinary shares in quoted companies in the UK. Share ownership is measured using data obtained from Euroclear (CREST), the electronic settlement system for equity share trading, and further analysis of share registers. Share Ownership 2010 shows how the value of UK quoted shares was distributed between sector of beneficial owner at 31 December 2010.

This chapter is about how pension schemes ensure that they have the money to fulfil their obligations of paying out benefits to pensioners and their dependents. Specifically, the chapter is about ‘funded’ pension schemes, those in which benefits (the schemes’ liabilities) are met from a fund built up in advance from contributions and returns on investment.
