Older People

This is the part of a series of short articles examining the well-being of older people. It provides an analysis of reported feelings of loneliness by older people using data from Wave 5 of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). More information about the Measuring National Well-being Programme and the measures of well-being can be found in the ‘National Well-being Wheel of measures’ .

This is the first in a series of short articles examining the well-being of older people aged 50 and over using measures related to the Measuring National Well-being Programme. The Office for National Statistics measures of well-being are organised into ten domains with each domain having between three and five separate indicators. More information about all the measures can be found in the ‘National Well-being wheel of measures’.

Estimates of the Very Old (including centenarians) for England and Wales provide annual mid year estimates by sex and single year of age for persons aged 90 to 104 and for the 105 and over age-group for England and Wales as a whole. Estimates for 2002 to 2010 take into account the revisions made to the mid-year population estimates (MYE) for 2002 to 2010, following the 2011 Census. These estimates were previously known as Estimates of the Very Elderly (including centenarians).

These data tables underlie the ‘Ageing in the UK’ interactive mapping tool. Using the tool helps bring these data alive, allowing you to analyse the age structure of the population at the local area level more easily. You can see how the population has aged over time and is projected to continue to age by selecting from a list of indicators of population ageing, such as median age, and animating the map. It is also possible to export jpegs of the maps you produce.

This report examines the changes in employment levels and rates for workers over the State Pension Age from 1993-2011, their employment status and working patterns, the lenght of duration with their current employer, the workplace size of their employer and their regional distribution throughout the UK.

Following the publication of the period and cohort life expectancy tables ONS prepares databases for the UK and each of the constituent countries containing mortality data used in the calculation of historic and projected life tables. Published for the first time in this release are tables of historic and projected qx (probability of dying at each age) and lx values (numbers of people surviving at each age) for the UK, on a period and cohort basis for each year 1951 to 2060.

This chapter looks at population change in the UK in the 20th and 21st centuries. First, it looks at how the population is ageing, presenting challenges for a number of policy areas relating to older people. Then it examines the main determinants of population change: fertility, mortality and migration. Finally, the chapter discusses the uncertainty surrounding population projections.

This chapter of Pension Trends looks at state pension provision in the UK through the Basic State Pension (BSP), the additional state pension, Pension Credit and related benefits. It compares UK mandatory state pension provision with that of other countries, before examining the impact of recent changes to state pension legislation and the likely impact of proposed changes to state pension legislation in the future.

A series of tables showing historic and projected life expectancies on a period and cohort basis. Life expectancies are provided by single year of age and sex from 1981 to 2060 for the UK and its constituent countries. The tables are based on unsmoothed calendar year mortality rates from 1981 to 2010 and projected mortality rates from the 2010-based national population projections.
