Migration

The Migration Statistics Quarterly Report (MSQR) is a summary of the quarterly releases of official international migration data. This edition covers those quarterly datasets released on 28 February. It also links to other migration products released on that date.

This bulletin, 2011 Census Key Statistics for Wales examines the defining characteristics of the population, who we are, how we live and what we do. The 2001 Census statistics covered are unique because the census is the only information source that measures these characteristics together across the whole population.

Estimates of short-term migration, based on information gathered by the International Passenger Survey (IPS) when migrants return home. Estimates refer to flows to and from England and Wales as well as the average stock of short-term migrants present in or absent from England and Wales. Statistics are provided for migration of periods between 3 and 12 months and 1 and 12 months.

Internal Migration within England and Wales, year ending June 2010.

This article uses a recently proposed measure, the overall replacement ratio or ORR, to assess the extent to which migration alters intergenerational replacement within the United Kingdom. The UK as a whole can be seen to experience ‘replacement migration’ as immigration compensates for fertility below the replacement level. However, the article shows that the impact of migration differs radically in the different regions of the country. South East England experiences very substantial immigration from both the rest of the UK and overseas, far more than is needed for intergenerational replacement, whereas most of the rest of the UK sees little or no net immigration and the ORR remains below the replacement level.
