International Migration

This report examines two similar data sets on short term migration: estimates of short-term immigration for local authorities and England and Wales and estimates of short-term residents (STRs) from the 2011 Census. These two datasets differ in terms of definitions and the estimates produced and this report aims to help the user understand these differences.

This statistical bulletin contains estimates of short-term international migration to and from the UK for England and Wales. It examines the latest figures for the year ending mid-2011 (1st July 2010 to 30th June 2011) and provides breakdowns by variables such as age, sex, main reason for migrating and citizenship

STIM tables contain detailed information on the characteristics of short-term international migrants. Table STIM.01 is based on information collected by the International Passenger Survey (IPS) at the end of migrants' visits and contains information on migrant flows to and from England and Wales. Estimates are provided for migrations of one to twelve months, three to twelve months and migrations meeting the United Nations definition of short-term migration. This table shows estimates broken down by migrants' main reason for migration. Broad reason groupings are published. Estimates are available for mid years (July to June) 2004 to 2011.

STIM tables contain detailed information on the characteristics of short-term international migrants. Table STIM.04 is based on information collected by the International Passenger Survey (IPS) at the end of migrants' visits and contains information on migrant flows to and from England and Wales. Estimates are provided for migrations of one to twelve months, three to twelve months and migrations meeting the United Nations definition of short-term migration. This table shows estimates broken down by migrants' citizenship. Broad citizenship groupings are published. Estimates are available for mid years (July to June) 2004 to 2011.

STIM tables contain detailed information on the characteristics of short-term international migrants. Table STIM.06 is based on information collected by the International Passenger Survey (IPS) at the end of a migrant's visit to England and Wales plus information from several administrative data sources. Estimates are provided for migrations meeting the United Nations definition of short-term migration and are for inflows only. This table shows the estimates of the overall flows into England and Wales by migrants' main reason for migration (employment or study) distributed, using the administrative data, down to regional and local authority level. Estimates are available for mid years (July to June) 2008 to 2011.

This product shows estimates of long-term international migration for the UK from the year ending September 2002 to the year ending June 2012. Data for 2012 is provisional. The tables and charts show the time series for immigration, emigration and net migration (the difference between immigration and emigration). Table 1 and Table 2 contain estimates of Long-Term International Migration (LTIM) by citizenship and by main reason for migration. LTIM is the most comprehensive measure of long-term international migration and is primarily based on the International Passenger Survey (IPS), with some adjustments. As detailed analyses on the characteristics of migrants are not possible from LTIM, Table 3 contains a cross tabulation of citizenship by main reason for migration based on IPS data only
