A substantial proportion of contemporary migration flows to the UK are made by nationals from countries which have recently joined the EU. The nature of A8 migration during the recession is examined in this paper, mainly using data from the Worker Registration Scheme. The recession has seen a decline in new A8 migrants entering the UK labour market, but the decline has been sectorally uneven, with demand for migrant labour being most persistent in the agricultural sector, raising questions about why this part of the UK economy is so different.

Data include provisional International Passenger Survey (IPS) estimates of long-term international migration, National Insurance number allocations to adult overseas nationals, control of immigration data, population by country of birth and nationality, interregional migration, and local area migration indicators.

This article examines the characteristics of foreign-born people living in the UK, how they differ between regions and countries, and from people that were born in the UK. Demographic, social and economic characteristics are examined using data from the Annual Population Survey, 2009 (APS). The article comprises two sections. The first section explores each characteristic individually, looking at how the foreign-born population differs to UK-born population, comparing across regions. The second presents a profile for each of the English regions, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

This article first explores the strengths and limitations of the data sources available to analyse migration to and from the UK by citizens of these eight accession countries, and how these sources may be used in combination despite their different definitions and coverage. It then goes on to discuss what these sources tell us about the demographic structure of A8 migration to the UK.
