2011 Census statistics provide a rich source of information about the number, distribution and characteristics of the population in England and Wales as at census day (27 March 2011). The statistics included in this release provide the first detailed cross tabulations of two or more topics from the census that add to the detail already provided in earlier releases.

This story will explore some of the characteristics behind changes in religious affliation between 2001 and 2011 Census. Characteristics such as age, sex, ethnicity, country of birth and participation in economic activity will be explored. There is a particular focus on findings for Christians, Muslims and people with no religion.

Changing religious affiliations in England and Wales

This table provides 2011 Census estimates that classify the usual resident population on census day (27 March 2011) by country of birth. The country of birth classification used in this table is an expanded 215 category classification that provides more detail than Quick Statistics table QS203.

This table provides 2011 Census estimates that classify the usual resident population by national identity, for regions, counties, London boroughs, districts and unitary authorities in England and Wales on census day (27 March 2011). National identity is a persons assessment of their own identity with respect to the country or countries with which they feel an affiliation. It is not dependent on legal nationality or ethnic group. The national identity classification used in this table is a 91 category classification.
