Health Inequalities

This release presents trends in estimates of mortality rates for males and females of working age in English regions and Wales, from 2001-03 to 2008-10, calculated using population denominators derived from the Labour Force Survey (LFS). The analysis is based on the seven class reduced National Statistics Socio-economic Classification (NS-SEC).

A comparison of rates of death at specific ages by the seven class and three class NS-SEC schemas between 1982 and 2006. It includes commentary on the extent and direction of social inequality in mortality over time and present a picture of relative and absoute changes in life chances across the social strata.

The data published here are the deaths and mortality rates at adult ages derived from the ONS Longitudinal Study (LS). These figures were used to calculate the life expectancy estimates by NS-SEC that were published by ONS in both an article and a bulletin in Spring 2011.

This interim technical report describes how wave two of the LOS was carried out, and how data from respondents interviewed in the first years of wave one and wave two were linked for the purpose of longitudinal analysis. The fieldwork for the first year of wave one was conducted between June 2009 and March 2010, and respondents were then interviewed for wave two a year after their wave one interview, between June 2010 and March 2011. Initial findings based on the wave two interim longitudinal data are provided in the LOS Wave Two Interim Report.
