Comparing data sources on families and households (Pdf 171Kb)
The ONS publishes estimates of families and households using the Labour Force Survey between ten yearly censuses. The LFS has been chosen as the preferred source of estimates on these topics due to its large sample size, long time series and timeliness, and because it provides estimates on a consistent basis for the whole UK. However the LFS is not the only source of data on families and households. This document provides a brief guide to the LFS and to alternative sources of data on this topic.

The Changing Demography of Mid-life, from the 1980s to the 2000s, Autumn 2011 (Pdf 188Kb)
This article examines changes between 1984 and 2007 in the demographic and socio-economic circumstances of British men and women in mid-life. Changing living arrangements in mid-life reflect historical changes in the occurrence and timing of life events such as marriage and parenthood, as well as increased longevity. In order to place mid-life in this wider demographic context, the article first reviews changes over time in kin availability across the adult life course using the British Household Panel Survey (2001) and Understanding Society (2009). The article goes on to use data from the General Household Survey (1984–2007) to document shifts over time in living arrangements for those aged 20–79. In the final part of the article we focus specifically on those aged between 45 and 64 and examine how their characteristics in terms of marital status, educational attainment, activity status and housing tenure have changed over the past quarter century.

Estimating the cohabiting population in 2007 (Pdf 128Kb)
This article summarises mid-2007 cohabitation estimates produced for England and Wales and compares these with estimates made for previous years. Over the last fifteen years there has been a rise in the number of cohabiting adults in England and Wales. Previous estimates indicate that there were 2.7 million cohabiting adults in 1992 (6 per cent of the population over 16-years-old). In 2007 it is estimated that the number of cohabiting adults had increased to 4.5 million (10 per cent of the population over 16-years-old). Cohabitation trends provide evidence to suggest that cohabitation will continue to rise for never married adults (and therefore overall), particularly at older ages. There is also evidence suggesting an end to historic increases in cohabitation levels for never married adults under 30-years-old.

Making cohabitation population estimates for 2003 (Pdf 20Kb)
This report describes the method used to produce the estimates in 2003. The cohabitation estimates compliment the published legal marital status population estimates. They show the numbers in each marital status category who are estimated to be in an, opposite-sex, co-residential cohabiting partnership. The cohabitation estimates are produced by age and sex for adults aged 16 and over. They are produced on an ad hoc basis at the same time as marital status population projections.
