This article analyses by age two of the current measures of national well-being: ‘satisfaction with income’ and ‘those who are finding their financial situation quite or very difficult’ and their effects on and their relationship to well-being. There will also be some indication of change in perceived financial situation over time and other characteristics of individuals. The data used will be from Understanding Society, the UKHLS.

The 2011 General Lifestyle Survey Overview report marks 40 years of results from a continuous household survey. The survey has monitored changes in the demographic, social and economic characteristics of households, families and people in Great Britain. Measuring National Well-being: Life in the UK 2012 provides a unique overview of well-being in the UK today. The report is the first snapshot of life in the UK to be delivered by the Measuring National Well-being programme and will be updated and published annually. Well-being is discussed in terms of the economy, people and the environment. Information such as the unemployment rate or number of crimes against the person are presented alongside data on people’s thoughts and feelings, for example, satisfaction with our jobs or leisure time and fear of crime. Together, a richer picture on ‘how society is doing’ is provided

DFLE adds a dimension of quality of life to LE estimates, providing users with a summary measure of population health. DFLE can be used as a high level outcome to monitor health improvement, effects of policy change at national and local level, and to support service planning across sectors, such as health, benefits and pensions. This bulletin updates a previous article and presents the second in a series of annual estimates of LE and DFLE at age 16 across English regions and LADs, for men and women during the period 2007-09.

This bulletin presents estimates of DFLE and LE along with indices of absolute and relative inequality across quintiles of Lower Super Output Areas (LSOAs) in England, as defined by the Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) 2007, for the periods 2002-05 and 2006-09.

This interim technical report describes how wave two of the LOS was carried out, and how data from respondents interviewed in the first years of wave one and wave two were linked for the purpose of longitudinal analysis. The fieldwork for the first year of wave one was conducted between June 2009 and March 2010, and respondents were then interviewed for wave two a year after their wave one interview, between June 2010 and March 2011. Initial findings based on the wave two interim longitudinal data are provided in the LOS Wave Two Interim Report.

Statistics on the life opportunities people in Great Britain have and how these vary by social and demographic characteristics

This report presents the latest figures on male and female health expectancy, at birth and at age 65, for the UK and its four constituent countries. While life expectancy (LE) provides an estimate of average expected life-span, healthy life expectancy (HLE) divides total LE into years spent in good or ‘not good’ health. Disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) divides LE into years lived with and without a chronic illness or disability. These figures are three-year averages. LE is taken from the UK national interim life tables published annually by ONS, and the measures of health and chronic illness from the General Household Survey (GHS) in Great Britain and the Continuous Household Survey (CHS) in Northern Ireland.

The population aged over 65 is becoming a larger percentage of the nation’s population, supported by a shrinking labour force. This article explores regional and sub-regional variations in the concentration of older people. Population projections indicate the expected future growth in the population at older ages. The article also investigates measures of wellbeing of the ageing population including benefits and income deprivation, life expectancy, aspects of health and social care, older workers, and qualifications and learning.
