Causes of Death

This bulletin presents mortality figures for causes of death that are considered avoidable in the presence of timely and effective healthcare or public health interventions (avoidable mortality). Figures are presented for England and Wales and the regions of England for the period 2001–2011. Trends in mortality by causes considered preventable (preventable mortality) or amenable to healthcare (amenable mortality), which are subsets of total avoidable mortality are also presented.

This bulletin presents the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on deaths related to drug poisoning (involving both legal and illegal drugs) and drug misuse (involving illegal drugs) in England and Wales for the last five years. Data from 1993 are available to download from the website, and are discussed in the commentary to provide context to the latest (2011) data. Figures are presented by cause of death, sex, age and substance(s) involved in the death.

This bulletin presents the latest figures for deaths where Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infection was mentioned on the death certificate by sex, age group and place of death, in England and Wales. Figures are presented for deaths registered in 2011, with previously released figures presented for 2001 to 2010 for comparison purposes. Information is also given about the context and use of the statistics, and the method used to produce them.

This bulletin presents the latest figures for deaths where Meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was mentioned or was identified as the underlying cause of death on death certificates. Data are presented for England and Wales and are broken down by sex, age group and place of death. Comparisons are made between data for 2011, the latest year, and previously released data from 1993 onwards. Information is given about the context and use of the statistics, and the methods used to produce them. For the first time, inequality in the number of deaths involving Staphylococcus aureus and MRSA are examined using the English and Welsh Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD 2010 and WIMD 2011) respectively.

Presents data on babies born in 2009 who died before their first birthday: the 2009 birth cohort for infant deaths. This includes babies who died either in 2009, or in 2010, and were under one year of age. It also contains additional analyses by some of the key risk factors affecting infant deaths, including age of mother and birthweight.

This bulletin presents statistics on avoidable mortality - deaths caused by certain conditions which should not occur in the presence of timely and effective health care or through wider public health interventions.
