UK Trade is a major component of two other key economic statistics – UK Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the UK Balance of Payments. This means that there is a threefold potential for UK Trade statistics to inform the Government’s view of the UK economy, as well as the views of others, such as economists, City analysts, academics, the media, and international organisations.

The phrase 'Pre-release Access' refers to the practice whereby official statistics in their final form, and any accompanying written commentary, are made available to an eligible person in advance of their publication. Besides ONS staff, the following persons are given pre-release access by the period indicated before release.

The International Trade in Services survey is a key source of UK trade data. It is important to note that the survey does not contain data for transportation, travel and banking industries. This data is obtained from other sources such as the International Passenger Survey and the Bank of England. As a result, these industries are excluded from the figures reported in this publication. Estimates for the overall level of trade in services, including these industries, are published in the Office for National Statistics Pink Book publication.

This publication provides estimates during the survey year 2011 on foreign direct investment flows, positions and earnings involving UK companies, broken down by continent, country, component and industry. The investment figures are published on a net basis, that is, they consist of investments net of disinvestments. The estimates in this publication are sourced principally from the Office for National Statistics’ comprehensive annual surveys into foreign direct investment. A summary of these results, by continent and country, was initially released as an ONS Statistical Bulletin for Foreign Direct Investment involving UK companies 2011 on 6th December 2012.

In addition, it is a major component of two other key economic statistics – UK Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the UK Balance of Payments. This means that there is a threefold potential for UK Trade statistics to inform the Government’s view of the UK economy, as well as the views of others, such as economists, City analysts, academics, the media, and international organisations.

The Balance of Payments (BOP) is a key macro-economic indicator as it measures the UK's financial flows with the rest of the world.

This publication presents a quarterly analysis of UK exports and imports of goods grouped according to the activity of which those goods are principal products. Data are presented according to the classes of the 2008 Classification of Product by Activity (CPA(08)) for the first time in this publication. All data are shown on a seasonally adjusted Balance of Payments basis at current prices, which provides a comprehensive set of CPA (08) trade in goods figures fully compatible with the National Statistics Balance of Payments and National Accounts outputs. This Q3 2012 issue of UK goods analysed in terms of industry is consistent with the figures shown in the National Statistics UK Trade Release of 6 December 2012.

The Monthly Review of External Trade Statistics is intended to supplement the information contained in the monthly National Statistics Statistical Bulletin on UK trade. This September 2012 issue of the monthly review is consistent with the figures shown in the UK Trade Statistical Bulletin of 9 November 2012.
