This report analyses data taken from the lx and qx tables in this release. It discuses the chances of surviving to age 100, the projected numbers of people surviving to age 100 using the principal, high and low variants and projections of future numbers of centenarians.

Period expectation of life: based on unsmoothed calendar year mortality rates from 1981-2010 and projected mortality rates from the 2010-based national population projections.

This bulletin presents male and female period life expectancy at birth and at age 65 for the UK, constituent countries, regions, counties and local areas. New figures are presented for 2008–10, with previously released figures for 2004–06 to 2007–09 for comparison purposes. The tables included show life expectancies for countries and regions, local areas with the highest and lowest life expectancies, and life expectancies for all local areas in rank order. Information is also given about the context, calculation and interpretation of life expectancy figures.
