Statistical bulletin: Health Expectancies at Birth and at Age 65 in the United Kingdom, 2008–2010 29-Aug-2012
This bulletin presents figures for healthy life expectancy (HLE) and disability-free life expectancy (DFLE) at birth and at age 65 for males and females in the UK and constituent countries in 2008–10 and compares this period with 2005–07. HLE and DFLE add a dimension of the quality of life expectancy (LE), providing users with a summary measure of the time spent in favourable and unfavourable health states, which can be used to inform policy, planning and research in both public and private sectors in areas such as health, population and pensions.

    This article analyses by age two of the current measures of national well-being: ‘satisfaction with income’ and ‘those who are finding their financial situation quite or very difficult’ and their effects on and their relationship to well-being. There will also be some indication of change in perceived financial situation over time and other characteristics of individuals. The data used will be from Understanding Society, the UKHLS.

    This release presents trends in estimates of mortality rates for males and females of working age in English regions and Wales, from 2001-03 to 2008-10, calculated using population denominators derived from the Labour Force Survey (LFS). The analysis is based on the seven class reduced National Statistics Socio-economic Classification (NS-SEC).

    This bulletin presents mortality figures for causes of death that are considered avoidable in the presence of timely and effective healthcare or public health interventions (avoidable mortality). Figures are presented for England and Wales and the regions of England for the period 2001–2011. Trends in mortality by causes considered preventable (preventable mortality) or amenable to healthcare (amenable mortality), which are subsets of total avoidable mortality are also presented.

    This release contains updated estimates for total healthcare expenditure in the UK between 1997 and 2011. Estimates are in current prices.
