  • The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 22/06/2012 (week 25) was 9,054. This represents a decrease of 1,116 deaths registered in comparison with the previous week (week 24).

  • The average number of deaths for the corresponding week over the previous five years was 8,750.

  • Moveable public holidays, when register offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published weeks and in the corresponding weeks in previous years.

  • The trend in recent weeks, where a lower than usual number of deaths was registered in week 23 and a higher than usual number in week 24 followed by deaths in week 25 returning to a more usual level for the time of year, is likely to be due to the closure of register offices over the Jubilee bank holiday.

Weekly death figures provide provisional counts of the number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the latest eight weeks for which data are available. Commentary on trends in annual mortality statistics can be found in Death registrations summary tables.
