  • The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 21/12/2012 (week 51) was 11,461. This represents an increase of 1,073 deaths registered in comparison with the previous week (week 50).

  • The average number of deaths for the corresponding week over the previous five years was 11,179.

  • Moveable public holidays, when register offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published weeks and in the corresponding weeks in previous years.

  • The increase in the deaths registered in the week ending 21/12/2012 is likely to be due to deaths being registered promptly before the Christmas holiday period.  This pattern is similar to previous years.

  • There are the same values in consecutive weeks for some age groups. However these counts are made up of unique death registrations.

Weekly death figures provide provisional counts of the number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the latest eight weeks for which data are available. Commentary on trends in annual mortality statistics can be found in Death registrations summary tables.
