The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in May 2012 was 44,011. This represents an increase of 2,326 deaths in comparison with the previous month and an increase of 3,907 deaths in comparison to the same month in 2011.
Moveable public holidays and the number of weekends, when register offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published months and in the corresponding months in previous years.
The increase in the provisional number of deaths registered in May 2012 may be the result of a higher number of days when register offices were open during the month in comparison to April 2012 and May 2011.
