  • The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in August 2012 was 39,045. This represents a decrease of 252 deaths in comparison with the previous month and an increase of 662 deaths in comparison to the same month in 2011.

  • Moveable public holidays and the number of weekends, when register offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published months and in the corresponding months in previous years.

Monthly death figures provide provisional counts of the number of deaths registered by area of usual residence for England and Wales. Commentary on trends in annual mortality statistics can be found in Death registrations summary tables.
