The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in January 2013 was 52,899. This represents an increase of 10,349 deaths in comparison with the previous month and an increase of 5,998 deaths in comparison to the same month in 2012.
The increase in deaths registered in January 2013 is likely to be the result of the cold weather during the month along with the higher number of days when register offices were open in comparison to December 2012 and January 2012.
Moveable public holidays and the number of weekends, when register offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published months and in the corresponding months in previous years.
Monthly death figures provide counts of the number of deaths registered by area of usual residence for England and Wales. Commentary on trends in annual mortality statistics can be found in Death registrations summary tables.
