The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in December 2012 was 42,550. This represents an increase of 418 deaths in comparison with the previous month and a decrease of 1,012 deaths in comparison to the same month in 2011.
Moveable public holidays and the number of weekends, when register offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published months and in the corresponding months in previous years.
Any annual figures for 2012 calculated from monthly deaths figures should be considered as provisional. A fully quality assured final annual dataset is not yet available.
Monthly death figures provide counts of the number of deaths registered by area of usual residence for England and Wales. Commentary on trends in annual mortality statistics can be found in Death registrations summary tables.
