  • The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in April 2013 was 49,740. This represents an increase of 4,826 deaths in comparison with the previous month and an increase of 8,056 deaths in comparison to the same month in 2012.

  • The higher number of deaths registered in April in comparison to the previous year is likely to be due in part to the prolonged period of cold weather.

  • Moveable public holidays and the number of weekends, when register offices are closed, affect the number of registrations made in the published months and in the corresponding months in previous years. Both Good Friday and Easter Monday fell in April 2012 whereas only Easter Monday fell in April 2013.

Monthly death figures provide counts of the number of deaths registered by area of usual residence for England and Wales. Commentary on trends in annual mortality statistics can be found in Death registrations summary tables.

Before September 2012, tables were published monthly as Monthly provisional figures on deaths registered by area of usual residence, England and Wales. The data years available include June 2011 - August 2012.

The United Kingdom Statistics Authority has designated these statistics as National Statistics, in accordance with the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 and signifying compliance with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.

Designation can be broadly interpreted to mean that the statistics:

  • meet identified user needs;
  • are well explained and readily accessible;
  • are produced according to sound methods; and
  • are managed impartially and objectively in the public interest.

Once statistics have been designated as National Statistics it is a statutory requirement that the Code of Practice shall continue to be observed.
