This product is part of the set of Small Area Population Estimates (SAPE).

It includes mid-year population estimates for both Lower Layer and Middle Layer Super Output Areas SOAs) in England and Wales by age and sex.  SOAs are geographies which were introduced in 2004 to improve the reporting of small area statistics.  They are built from groups of 2001 Census Output Areas and are of consistent size and fixed boundaries.

SOA Population Estimates are consistent with local authority, regional and national population estimates.

Population estimates for the Super Output Areas in England and Wales for mid-2002 to mid-2010 have been revised in light of the 2011 Census.  The revised estimates were published on the 26th November 2013 and supersede the estimates in these tables.  The revised estimates are available from the link below and details for further population estimates releases can be found on the UK Statistics Authority Release Calendar.
