  • The 573 Westminster Parliamentary Constituencies in England and Wales have a mean population of 98,000 in mid-2011.

  • On average Westminster Parliamentary Constituencies in Wales have smaller populations than those in England, with a mean population size of 76,600 compared to 99,600 in England.

  • Predominantly urban ‘borough’ constituencies have a mean population size of 102,400; while the more rural ‘county’ constituencies have a mean population size of 94,400.

  • The population age distribution varies widely across the country with the parliamentary constituencies with the youngest median ages being located in central areas of large cities.

  • Mid-2011 parliamentary constituency population estimates are based on the results of the 2011 Census.

  • Parliamentary constituency population estimates are of particular interest to parliamentary organisations, researchers and MPs.

This product is part of the set of Small Area Population Estimates (SAPE). It includes estimates of the usually resident population as at 30 June of the reference year for Westminster parliamentary constituencies in England and Wales by age and sex. These estimates are consistent with the Census Based Super Output Area (SOA), local authority, regional and national population estimates. Estimates reflect the administrative boundaries in place on 30 June 2011.
