Retail sales values (the amount spent on retail) grew by 3.2 per cent between February 2011 and February 2012. Sales volumes (the amount bought) increased by 1.0 per cent over the same period
The amount spent in food stores between February 2011 and February 2012 grew by 5.0 per cent with an increase of 1.0 per cent in the amount bought.
The largest increase across the different retail sectors between February 2011 and February 2012 was for non-store retailing (mainly market stalls and online retailers). Sales values increased by 8.6 per cent and sales volumes by 9.2 per cent.
Finally as each of the sectors are different in size it shows that food store inflation was the main factor driving the increase in the amount spent on retail between February 2011 and February 2012. However increases in the amount bought for non-store retailing (mainly market stalls and online retailers) was the main driver of the total increase in the amount bought across the whole retail sector.
