The North East’s housing stock increased by the smallest percentage over the 10 years from 2001 to 2011. The share of new homes built on previously developed land increased the most.
Between 2001 and 2011, the total stock of dwellings in the region increased by 4.4 per cent. This was considerably lower than the England average of 7.6 per cent and the smallest percentage increase of all the English regions.
The share of new dwellings built on previously developed land in the North East has increased by 14 percentage points between 2003 and 2010. This is the largest regional increase, but the North East is still 6 percentage points below the England average (70 per cent compared with 76 per cent).
In 2010, the North East region produced the highest output of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per resident at 9.4 tonnes. Emissions per person have decreased by 28.3 per cent since 2005, the largest reduction of all the English regions. The industrial and commercial sector was responsible for 56 per cent of the total CO2 emissions in the region. The highest level for this sector was in Northumberland UA (3,970 kilotonnes), which includes the port town of Blyth.
During 2009 and 2010, 14 per cent of the total distance travelled per person per year in the North East was by public transport. Only the South West had a lower average daily motor vehicle flow on major roads than the North East’s 17,000 vehicles per day in 2010.
The proportion of household waste recycled or composted in 2010/11 was 36 per cent, the second lowest figure of any region. This compares with 42 per cent in England as a whole.
In the five years to 2010/11, the percentage of local authority collected waste sent to landfill decreased by 19.2 percentage points, the second largest decrease of any region.
