London recycles or composts the lowest proportion of household waste of any English region, but the remaining waste per household is the lowest.
The household recycling rate in London was 32.4 per cent in 2010/11– the lowest rate of all English regions. London households produced the lowest weight of residual waste (899 kilogrammes), compared with the England average of 1,021 kilogrammes.
London produced nearly 44,700 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2010, an average of 5.7 tonnes per resident – the lowest rate of all English regions. There were differences at local authority level. At one extreme, Westminster produced a total of 3,200 kilotonnes of CO2 emissions, primarily from industry and commerce (75 per cent), while at the other Kingston upon Thames produced only 800 kilotonnes of CO2.
The average London resident travelled 5,000 miles in the year 2009 to 2010, 40 per cent of which was on public transport – the highest proportion in Great Britain.
London had the highest average daily motor vehicle flow on urban major roads at 27,400 vehicles per day in 2010, compared with 20,100 for England.
London completed construction of more than 18,800 permanent dwellings in 2010/11, one of the two highest amounts among the English regions. Between 2001 and 2011, the total stock of dwellings in the region increased by 7.4 per cent, slightly lower than the England average of 7.6 per cent.
