UK Population Estimate Revealed

The United Kingdom population was estimated to be 63.2 million in 2011, up 7 per cent (4.1 million) from 2001 and 50 per cent (21.1 million) from 1911.This is the largest decennial percentage change in population since the 1961 Census. England had the largest population with 84 per cent of people, 8 per cent lived in Scotland, 5 per cent in Wales and 3 per cent in Northern Ireland.

Of the population, 16 per cent (10.4 million) were over 65 years of age, a slight increase of 0.5 per cent from 2001, but a three-fold increase from 1911 (5 per cent). Whereas, the number of young people (14 and under) has almost halved over the past 100 years, from 31 per cent in 1911, to 18 per cent in 2011, despite the census recording a higher number of births in recent years.

The data released today were compiled from the 2011 Censuses of England and Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. The first release of Scottish 2011 Census data were also released today.
