For March 2014 there were 5.4 million people working in the public sector across the UK accounting for 17.7% of people in employment

For March 2014 there were 5.4 million people working in the public sector across the UK accounting for 17.7% of people in employment. The number of people working in the public sector fell by 103,000 between December 2013 and March 2014, mainly due to Lloyds Banking Group plc moving out of the public sector.

For March 2014, the top three industries were the National Health Service (NHS) which employed 1.6 million people, Education which employed 1.5 million people and Public Administration which employed 1.1 million people.
