The animated video with commentary explains the latest labour market statistics published on 18 January 2012. It shows:

  • The latest unemployment (2.68 million), employment (29.12 million) and inactivity (9.29 million) estimates.

  • Male unemployment is 1.56 million and the highest since 1995 with female unemployment 1.13 million and the highest since 1987.

  • The unemployment rate is up most in the North East over the past year, currently 12.0 per cent. The UK rate is 8.4 per cent and there are animated maps showing changes across the UK since 1992.

  • Finally, it shows the number of self-employed is up 7.4 per cent since the start of the 2008 recession with the number of employees down 2.7 per cent. Total employment is down 1.4% over the same period.
